COM Express (Computer-on-Module Express) is an open embedded computing standard defined by the PICMG specification. It integrates a processor, memory, storage, and core I/O onto a compact module that connects to an application-specific carrier board via a standardised high-density connector. This separation of compute from application logic means you can upgrade the processor module independently — protecting your carrier board investment across multiple product generations.
COM Express modules are available in three form factors (Mini, Compact, and Basic) and several connector pin-out types (most commonly Type 6, Type 7, and Type 10), each targeting different performance levels and application requirements.
COM Express Mini — Type 10 (84 x 55 mm): The smallest COM Express form factor, built for low-power ARM and Intel Atom-class processors. A single high-density connector keeps the footprint minimal while still providing USB, PCIe, SATA, and display interfaces. Passive cooling is standard, making it ideal for sealed or fanless enclosures. Com Express mini is best suited for space- and power-constrained designs that need a full OS environment without active cooling.
COM Express Compact — Type 6 (95×95 mm) A mid-size form factor offering a significant step up in processing power over Mini, supporting mid-range Intel Core and AMD Ryzen Embedded processors. The dual-connector layout provides richer I/O including more PCIe lanes, multiple display outputs, and Gigabit Ethernet — all in a footprint that still fits demanding space constraints. Compact modules are most suitable for industrial panels, fanless box PCs, and embedded HMI where performance matters but a full Basic module is too large.
COM Express Basic — Type 7 (125 x95 mm) The most capable COM Express form factor, supporting high-performance Intel Core i5/i7/i9, Xeon, and AMD Ryzen Embedded V-series processors. Up to 32 PCIe lanes, multiple GbE ports, and extensive display and storage interfaces make COM Express Basic the standard choice for demanding workloads. The large module size accommodates active cooling solutions where needed. Best suited for high-throughput applications where processing power, I/O density, and multi-display capability are critical.
